What is creative testing?
Creative testing means running several versions of an ad side by side and letting purchases decide which one gets the budget. When the versions are built from interchangeable parts, a winner also tells you which parts it is made of, and those parts become the starting point for the next round.
Why existing footage is enough
Most brands have more raw video than they use: past shoots and old ads that ran once and stopped. Every video is made of parts that do different jobs. Once you separate them, a handful of videos turns into a library of openings, middles and endings you can combine in many ways.
How I build the tests
- I cut every raw video into three parts: the hook, the opening seconds that stop the scroll; the body, which shows the product and why it is worth buying; and the CTA, the ask at the end. Each old video ended up as 15 to 20 variations.
- I pair the cuts with trending sounds and different editing styles, because the same cut can perform differently under a different sound or edit.
- I make separate versions for Meta and TikTok. On TikTok especially, following the right trend and picking a sound that stops the scroll mattered more than the quality of the footage.
- I mix hooks, bodies, CTAs and sounds into new combinations and run them until winners show up.
- I keep swapping. When a combination wins, I build the next round from its parts: a new hook on a winning body, or the winning hook with a different CTA.
- I judge by sales. A winner is the combination that brings purchases at a cost the margin can carry.
The numbers from the fashion account
| Meta | TikTok | Both platforms | |
|---|---|---|---|
| ROAS | 12.31x | 12.06x | About 12.2x |
| Purchases | 1,462 | 1,325 | 2,787 |
| Cost per purchase | EGP 38.30 | About EGP 37.7 | |
| Ad spend | EGP 55,998 | EGP 105,013 | |
| Revenue | EGP 689,301 | EGP 1,280,421 |
Figures from the real Meta and TikTok accounts over about 20 days, client name withheld under NDA. Full breakdown with both screenshots: fashion case.
No single ad carried the account. In the Meta screenshot, every ad shown sits between 10.32x and 15.86x ROAS. That is what the system is for: several strong combinations carrying the spend together.
When this approach fits
- You already have raw video or old ads, and no budget for a new shoot.
- You can run enough combinations at the same time for purchases to separate the winners.
Questions about creative testing
Do I need new videos to test creatives?
Not always. For a fashion brand with no creative budget, I built every test from footage the brand already had and reached 12.31x ROAS on Meta and 12.06x on TikTok.
Which parts of a video should I test?
I split each video into the hook, the body and the CTA, and pair them with trending sounds. Mixing those parts gave me 15 to 20 variations from each old video.
How do you know which creative won?
From purchases and ROAS in Ads Manager, for each combination. The parts of the winning combinations feed the next round of tests.
